Best Tactics

There is no proven best FM27 tactic yet: every tactic on FM Scout's FM27 Tactics Index (updated Nov 1, 2026) is a 4-2-3-1, the most downloaded is "AsderBey 4-2-3-1 Tiki-Taka", which claims 34 wins from 34 league games, and the results on all four are their creators' own claims from Launch Preview saves, with testers reporting mixed results in the comments. Football Manager 27 has been playable since the free Launch Preview opened at 6pm GMT Oct 29, 2026, on a near-final build, and SI's match engine can change with patches before and after the Nov 10 release. FM27 also judges a tactic partly by how well your own squad can carry it out, so the same download can work for one club and fail for another.

What are the best FM27 tactics so far?

FM Scout sorts its index into tiers named Elite, Top, Sub-Top and Underdog, without stating the criteria. Its four FM27 tactics on Nov 1, 2026, with each creator's claims as posted:

None of the four names the build or patch it was tested on, and none has an independent test marked on the index. FMInside's tactics hub, which lets readers filter by version and shows how many independent testers each tactic has, was still led on Nov 1, 2026 by tactics built in Football Manager 26 (26.3.2), all with 0 independent testers.

How the leading tactics are built

AsderBey 4-2-3-1 Tiki-Taka. Its page describes a 4-2-3-1 Attacking shape in possession and a 4-2-3-1 Compact Press out of possession: a Sweeper Keeper, two Ball-Playing Defenders, two Defensive Midfielders, two Inside Forwards who drop to Wingers without the ball, an Attacking Midfielder and a "Centre Forward". Instructions ask for shorter passing, higher tempo, extremely narrow width, a high press, a much higher line, counter-pressing and extremely urgent pressing, with a Very Attacking mentality. Testers disagree: one says it works but only "on Balanced mode", another was sacked by Dec 2 in game, and several doubted the 34 from 34 record.

GYR's 4231. The page shows its shapes only in screenshots and a video, but lists three tips: train players in the role they play, lower training intensity to manage fitness, and remove "Get stuck in" if you collect too many yellow cards. One tester got 80 or more points over two simulated Ajax seasons after lowering the defensive line; another was sacked at Man Utd in season three. The creator says early versions did not carry to lower leagues and a 4-3-3 version is next.

The Pioneer. A 4-2-3-1 with a double pivot and a channel forward, aimed at sides below the elite; the creator's one tip is a "Much Lower" defensive line if you concede too many. Two commenters reported the download broken (the page shows 0 B).

FM27 Underdog 4-2-3-1. Described as high pressing, direct counters and narrow attacks, with no roles or instructions on the page and placeholder test text.

Why "best tactic" means less in FM27

0:54 FM27 adds Tactical Effectiveness, which SI says rests on Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy-In and Next Match Information, shown as gauges on the Tactics, Training and Recruitment screens. Its partner, Tactical Complexity, counts your team, player and opposition instructions: complex tactics take longer to work but have a higher ceiling, simple ones work at once with limited potential, and lower-division squads may struggle with complex plans. SI developer Antony Farley told FourFourTwo that two gauges show a tactic's intensity and complexity, and a third its overall effectiveness.

16:47 So a downloaded tactic carries its complexity with it, but not your squad's understanding or buy-in. By SI's definition, a tactic with as many instructions as AsderBey's counts as complex, so the same file loaded at a lower-league club may take a long time to work. FM Scout reports that AI managers use Tactical Effectiveness too. Training also changed: FM27's senior squad trains for match preparation, cohesion and tactical understanding, replacing the old Units system. More on Tactical Effectiveness and Training.

4:22 During matches, FM27's Tactical Tweaks let you change things like urgency, width or pressing from the touchline without opening the Tactics screen, and they stay on until you turn them off. How do you install a downloaded FM27 tactic?

Tactics download as a file (some as a zip). On FM Scout, the Underdog tactic's creator told a commenter to place it in the Sports Interactive folder, under Football Manager 2027, in the tactics folder; note the folder name keeps the "2027" even though SI calls the game Football Manager 27. A commenter who continued an FM26 save could not see the tactic at first. Then load it from the Tactics screen.

In Football Manager 26, FM Scout's index was also topped by 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 variants, such as "The Hare" (4-2-3-1) and "Pep's PERFECT 433", and Passion4FM ran a meta tactic feature on GYR's quadruple-winning 4-3-3 gegenpress. FM26 introduced separate In Possession and Out of Possession formations; SI's FM27 reveals do not say whether that system or its role list changed, so it is presumed to carry over (see Tactics and Best Formations).

How to judge a tactic before you trust it

• Check the build. A Launch Preview result may not survive a match engine update after Nov 10.
• Read the comments. On all four FM27 pages, testers' results differ from the creator's.
• 2:25 Look at your own gauges. If effectiveness is low, simplify or train; SI says simple tactics work at once.
• Match the squad level. FM Scout's tiers separate elite and underdog tactics for a reason.
