Tactics

FM27 keeps Football Manager 26's tactics system, with separate In Possession and Out of Possession shapes and roles, and adds Tactical Tweaks and revamped Shouts on the match screen, Tactical Effectiveness and Tactical Complexity, and new attacking Player Instructions.

Tactics in Football Manager 27 build on Football Manager 26's system, where a team has one shape and set of roles In Possession and another Out of Possession, and add four things: Tactical Tweaks that change instructions from the touchline, Shouts rebuilt to work on players' minds, Tactical Effectiveness, which measures how well your players can carry out the plan, and Tactical Complexity, which makes ambitious tactics slower to learn but higher in ceiling. Sports Interactive revealed them in its Oct 5 and Oct 9, 2026 deep dives. SI has not said whether FM27 changes FM26's role list, tactical styles or set-piece screens, so this page labels what comes from FM26 and what is new.

How do FM27 tactics work?

The base system is Football Manager 26's, which SI has not said it replaces. In Football Manager 26, the Tactics menu has four views: In Possession, Out of Possession, Both and Combined. You pick a tactical style, then an In Possession formation, and the game suggests three Out of Possession formations to pair with it. Each player gets a role for each phase, so a full-back can be a wing-back with the ball and part of a back five without it. Official Steam screenshots of FM27 show the same structure, with Brighton's squad listed by In Possession and Out of Possession positions in 4-2-3-1 DM Wide and 4-2-2-2 DM shapes. Which shapes work best is on Best Formations and Best Tactics. The clip is WorkTheSpace's Oct 30, 2026 beginner's guide, played on FM27 before launch.

Roles and duties

Football Manager 26 removed duties, replacing them with the two formations and their role sets. It added In Possession roles such as the No-Nonsense Goalkeeper, Ball-Playing Goalkeeper, Playmaking Wing-Back, Advanced Wing-Back, Midfield Playmaker, Wide Central Midfielder, Wide Forward and Channel Forward, and dropped the Mezzala, Enganche and Trequartista. SI's eight FM27 deep dives do not mention roles or duties, so FM26's list is presumed to carry over, but this is not confirmed as of Nov 1, 2026.

One change is confirmed: Out of Possession roles now appear among a player's key attributes in the Player Database, and Scout Reports show his or her Out of Possession role. That makes it easier to recruit for how a player defends, not only how he or she attacks; more on Recruitment and Scouting.

Team and Player Instructions

In Football Manager 26, Team Instructions show only those for the selected third of the pitch, split In and Out of Possession, with a "Pass to Feet" instruction and a "Visualiser" of nine grid squares. FM27 adds new Player Instructions for attacking the box: ask a player to arrive late in the box or attack the defensive line, aiming at the near post, the far post or central areas, with the options depending on position. They work with the match engine's reworked box movement, described on Match Engine. The clip is from WorkTheSpace's first 25 hours with FM27, posted Oct 28, 2026.

What is new: Tactical Tweaks and Shouts

Tactical Tweaks are one-button instruction changes you make from the touchline without opening the Tactics screen: swap the wingers' sides, send the goalkeeper up for a last attack, play with more urgency, go longer, exploit the width, or reduce the press. They stay on until you turn them off, there is no cap on how many you use, and your staff in the dugout advise when to start or stop one. Shouts were rebuilt to change players' mental state instead of giving small attribute boosts. Everything SI said about both is on Tactical Tweaks and Shouts.

What is new: Tactical Effectiveness and Complexity

Tactical Effectiveness builds on the old Tactical Familiarity as the measure of how ready your team is, and rests on four areas: Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy-In and Next Match Information, shown as gauges on the Tactics, Training and Recruitment screens. Tactical Complexity counts how many team, player and opposition instructions you use: complex tactics take longer to work but can reach higher, and simple ones work at once with less potential. SI developer Antony Farley told FourFourTwo that two gauges show a tactic's intensity and complexity, and a third its overall effectiveness. The full explanation is on Tactical Effectiveness.

How training ties in

FM27's training is built around carrying out the next match's plan: the old Units system was replaced by setups aimed at match preparation, and team sessions target areas such as pressing intensity or build-up play. Training is where Tactical Understanding is raised, so a new tactic is learned on the training ground before it works on the pitch. See Training.

Does a downloaded "meta" tactic still work?

FMInside notes that because Tactical Effectiveness weighs the squad's understanding, ability and buy-in, a copied tactic may suit some squads less than it did in FM26. By SI's own description, a complex tactic that suits one club can take a long time to work for another, and lower-division squads may struggle with it. Tested FM27 tactics, with the build each was tested on, are on Best Tactics.

Frequently asked questions

Does FM27 keep In Possession and Out of Possession tactics? Yes. FM27 builds on Football Manager 26's split between In Possession and Out of Possession shapes and roles, and SI's FM27 screenshots show both. SI has not announced changes to the role list.

Are duties back in FM27? SI has not said so. Football Manager 26 removed duties in favor of the two formations and their roles, and none of FM27's deep dives mention bringing them back, as of Nov 1, 2026.

What are Tactical Tweaks in FM27? Tactical Tweaks are buttons on FM27's match screen that change several instructions at once, such as playing with more urgency or reducing the press, without opening the Tactics screen. They stay active until you turn them off.

What is Tactical Complexity in FM27? Tactical Complexity measures how many instructions an FM27 tactic uses. Complex tactics take longer to learn but have a higher ceiling; simple ones work quickly but with limited potential.

Can I change tactics during a match in FM27? Yes. You can still open the Tactics screen, or use Tactical Tweaks and Shouts from the touchline, with staff advising when a tweak should start or stop.

Do I need a complex tactic to win in FM27? No. SI says simple FM27 tactics take effect at once and suit squads that struggle with complex plans, such as many lower-division teams; complex ones pay off later with better players.
