Match Engine

FM27's match engine rebuilds running speed, acceleration and stamina from Hawk-Eye Innovations data, adds Flair-based skill moves and defensive jockeying, and rebalances marking and attacks into the box. The 2D view gets smaller discs, a stronger ball shadow and see-through nets.

Football Manager 27's match engine moves players more like real footballers: Sports Interactive rebuilt running speed, acceleration and stamina from Hawk-Eye Innovations tracking data, per SI's Oct 5, 2026 deep dive, added skill moves that depend on a player's Flair and Dribbling, gave defenders new jockeying movements, and reworked how teams attack the box. The 2D view was redrawn too, with smaller ball and player discs and more transparent nets, per SI's Oct 16 deep dive. Everything here comes from SI's reveals of development builds before the Nov 10, 2026 launch, and SI warns that such footage may change before release. How the engine looks around the action (crowds, weather, cutscenes) is on Match Day Experience. The clip is SI's Oct 19, 2026 gameplay preview, from a recent development build.

What is Hawk-Eye's part in FM27?

Hawk-Eye Innovations, the ball-tracking company, has a multi-year partnership with SI that adds new on-ball and off-ball animations to FM27. SI used clips from real matches and bespoke motion capture for the new skill moves, and Hawk-Eye's data to rebuild how fast players run and accelerate. SI's point is that players no longer recover defensively or turn off the ball at unrealistic speeds, and that top speed now follows a player's attributes.

Stamina and substitutes

Stamina has a bigger effect in FM27. SI says it now shapes how much ground a player covers, how often he or she can sprint again, and how condition falls over the 90 minutes, so substitutes can matter more late in a match. Tired players show it in their body language. For a manager, that makes the condition of the bench and the timing of changes a bigger lever than before, alongside the in-match controls on Tactical Tweaks and Shouts.

Skill moves and Flair

New skill moves include body feints, Elasticos and Heel Chops, per SI, and whether a player tries them depends on the Flair and Dribbling attributes. So the players who show them most should be those rated high in both, typically wingers and playmakers. SI has not said whether skill moves change the outcome of a duel by themselves or mainly change how the duel looks.

Defending: jockeying and marking

In 1v1 duels, defenders now use new jockeying movements instead of unnaturally fast bursts of acceleration, and the Marking and Anticipation attributes carry more weight. SI also says marking, passing and defensive setups were rebalanced, without publishing the numbers behind it. The clip is SI's Oct 22, 2026 First Look Livestream, played on a pre-launch build.

Attacking the box

SI says it revamped attacking movement in the penalty area after studying "thousands of hours" of football. Attackers spread out more and produce more varied cutbacks, double movements and crosses, and the Anticipation and Off The Ball attributes decide how good their runs are. New Player Instructions let you ask a player to arrive late in the box or attack the defensive line, aimed at the near post, the far post or central areas, depending on position; they are explained on Tactics.

The 2D match engine

The 2D view, the top-down view of discs on a pitch, gets four changes in SI's Oct 16, 2026 deep dive: smaller ball and player discs, a stronger shadow under the ball, discs that show a player's feet instead of an arrow, and more transparent goal nets. SI shows them in images but has not explained each one's purpose in words. SI has not published a new camera list for 2D or 3D in FM27.

Heat Maps, Action Zones and Pass Maps

Analysis screens that Football Manager 26 players missed come back. During a match, Heat Maps return and Action Zones join a wider data upgrade; after the final whistle the Data Hub shows Pass Maps of where moves start and chances come from. The screen between highlights supports tile swapping and layouts that scale with your monitor. The numbers behind them are on Data Hub.

How FM26's engine was received

In Football Manager 26, the first game on Unity, the match engine was one of the few parts players praised: when Steam reviews fell to "Mostly Negative" at launch, PC Gamer reported many players agreed the new match engine was promising while criticizing bugs and the interface. Football Manager 26's later updates upgraded the match engine AI, per SI on Apr 16, 2026. FM27 builds on that engine rather than replacing it; how the two games compare overall is on FM27 vs FM26.

Frequently asked questions

Does FM27 have a new match engine? FM27 keeps the Unity engine from Football Manager 26 but rebuilds movement with Hawk-Eye Innovations data, adds Flair-based skill moves and jockeying, makes stamina matter more, and revamps attacking the box. SI described the changes on Oct 5, 2026.

What is Hawk-Eye in FM27? Hawk-Eye Innovations is SI's partner for FM27's animations: its real-match clips and motion capture power the new skill moves, and its data rebuilt players' running speed and acceleration.

Which players do skill moves in FM27? Skill moves such as body feints, Elasticos and Heel Chops depend on the Flair and Dribbling attributes, so they come from players rated highly in both.

Is the 2D match engine still in FM27? Yes. FM27's 2D view has smaller ball and player discs, a stronger ball shadow, discs showing feet instead of arrows, and more transparent goal nets.

Do Pass Maps and Heat Maps return in FM27? Yes. Heat Maps and Action Zones return during matches, and Pass Maps return in the post-match Data Hub.

Can I try FM27's match engine for free? Yes, on PC and Mac in the free Launch Preview until 6pm GMT on Nov 3, 2026, with every mode included.
