How to Sign Players Cheaply

To sign players cheaply in FM27, use the Player Database's Quick Filters for free agents, expiring contracts and transfer- or loan-listed players, look for low release clauses, set your Scouting Range, and watch the new sell-on fees in Scout Reports. Young targets in FM27 want game time, so a promise of minutes can matter as much as money.

To sign players cheaply in FM27, start with the Player Database's Quick Filters, which SI says find free agents, players nearing the end of their deals and players on transfer or loan lists, then add a filter for low minimum-fee release clauses and set your Scouting Range so your scouts look where prices are low. Football Manager 27 changes a few sums: Scout Reports now show sell-on fees, and a club that owes one asks for more; young players weigh game time more heavily; and the Director of Football advises on fees and payment structures during talks. Ready-made lists of cheap targets from the Launch Preview data are on Free Agents and Bargain Players, provisional until the Nov 10, 2026 release.

1. Sign free agents

Players without a club cost no fee, only wages. FM Scout's FM27 list has more than 170 at the start of a save, most of them veterans, with Jadon Sancho (26) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (29) the younger names with room to grow. Your setup decides who is still free: SI's first-save tips explain the Original, Real World and Your World transfer modes and the switch for whether AI clubs trade in the first window. The full list is on Free Agents.

2. Target expiring contracts and release clauses

SI's first-hours guide says the Contracts view shows short contracts and release clauses, and extra Player Database filters reveal players with low minimum-fee release clauses. A player in the last year of his deal is in the same Quick Filter as free agents.

3. Scout where prices are low

Scouting Range, on the Player Database screen beside your budgets, sets how far your scouts reach and how much of the budget they spend, which SI calls especially important in smaller leagues. Scout Reports in FM27 also show Tactical Effectiveness, so a cheap player who suits your tactic can be worth more to you than a dear one who does not. FMInside's FM27 Best Bargains filter, for instance, is full of players at clubs in Japan, MLS and Liga MX. See Recruitment and Scouting.

4. Check the sell-on fee before you bid

New in FM27, sell-on fees appear in Scout Reports, and a selling club with a sell-on clause asks for more. Two similar players can cost different amounts for this reason alone.

5. Use the Director of Football in negotiations

In FM27, the Director of Football advises on transfer fees and payment structures during negotiations. FM Scout adds that this covers loans too, that all offers for the same player now arrive in one message, and that the Transfer History screen shows add-ons beside the fee, so you can see how other deals were structured.

6. Promise game time to young players

FM27's young players weigh game time more heavily, which strengthens the promise to treat your club as a stepping stone. For a bargain teenager, a squad role can do the work a higher wage would. FM Scout's Bargain Wonderkids list has more than 420 under-21s with asking prices up to £7.5M; see Wonderkids and How to Develop Youth Players.

7. Borrow before you buy

Loans add quality without a long-term commitment. FM Scout's Football Manager 26 first-season guide called them useful for filling gaps or testing a player before buying, with January the moment for short emergency loans. SI's FM27 reveals do not describe changes to loans with an option to buy as of Nov 1, 2026.

8. Wait for the deadline, and watch the agents

Transfer Deadline Day returns in FM27 "as a larger focus for the game", and agent offers sit on the Recruitment screen all window, ramping up near the deadline. Players offered by their agents late in the window are worth a look when you have budget left.

9. Free up money first

Two FM26-era tips still apply as principles. FM Scout advises selling players you do not need, since their wages fund better signings, and spreading the budget over several targets. SI's FM26 transfer guide notes you can move money between the wage and transfer budgets. FM27 adds new Squad Cost Ratio rules and "global spending readjustments", which SI had not detailed as of Nov 1, 2026. More on Transfers and Contracts and Staff, Board and Finances.
