The best FM27 free agent is Karim Benzema, 38, rated 88 on FM Scout's provisional list of more than 170 free players, ahead of Riyad Mahrez (86) and Francesco Acerbi (85); the best long-term pick is Jadon Sancho, 26, rated 81 now with room to reach 92. Both FM Scout and FMInside's free transfers table come from the Launch Preview database, playable free since 6pm GMT Oct 29, 2026, and both put Benzema first. These are lists as read on Nov 1, 2026, and they are provisional until Football Manager 27's full release on Nov 10, 2026.

FM Scout's Stam first posted the FM27 list on Sep 13, 2026 and rebuilt it from the Launch Preview data on Oct 29, 2026. Each player gets two of FM Scout's own scores on a 1 to 100 scale tied to English football: R, today's ability, and R+, where the player could get to. FM Scout reads 80 or more as a key player for a top-division side and 74 to 76 as an important player in the second tier. The top 20 as read on Nov 1, 2026:

Most are veterans near the end of their careers. The two that stand out for the long term are Sancho (R+ 92) and Zinchenko (R+ 85), the only players in the top 20 whose potential is well above today's level. FM Scout marks injury-prone players with an icon, so check it before signing.

FMInside's scale is not FM Scout's, so compare the order, not the numbers. Its table also includes names further down that FM Scout's top 20 leaves out, such as Paul Pogba (33), Sergio Ramos (40) and Santi Cazorla (41).
How do free agents work at the start of an FM27 save?
A free agent is a player with no club: you pay no transfer fee, only wages. SI's first-hours guide says to find them with the Quick Filters on the Player Database screen, which also pick out players near the end of their contracts and those on transfer or loan lists.
Three setup choices decide who is free when you start, per SI's first-save tips:
- Transfer mode. Original includes every updated transfer, even ones made after the save's start; Real World makes transfers on their real dates in game; Your World freezes clubs and players as they were at the start of 2026/27. A player who signed for a club in real life may still be free in one mode and gone in another.
- First transfer window. "Allow First Transfer Window Activity" decides whether AI clubs trade in the first window, so whether rivals can sign the free agents before you.
- Database size. FM Scout loaded every male player (550,000 and more) to build its list and warns that a smaller database may leave some names out of your save.
FM Scout also notes the list assumes a top-league club: lower-league sides are unlikely to attract these players. More on the market itself on Transfers and Contracts.
Tips for signing free agents in FM27
- Look at potential, not only ability. FM Scout's advice is to read the R+ column to find players who may still improve.
- Promise minutes to younger free agents. In FM27, young players weigh game time more heavily when deciding where to go.
- Check the fit. FM27's Scout Reports show Tactical Effectiveness, so you can see whether a free agent suits your tactic before you offer a deal. See Tactical Effectiveness.
- Watch for agent offers. Agent offers sit on the Recruitment screen through the window and ramp up near the deadline, with Transfer Deadline Day back in FM27.
- Mind the wage bill. In Football Manager 26, Passion4FM's free agent tips stressed wages, squad chemistry and negotiating early; FM27 adds new Squad Cost Ratio rules whose details SI has not published as of Nov 1, 2026.
