How to Develop Youth Players
To develop young players in FM27, give them real minutes (FM27's young players value game time more), set individual training for attributes, traits and positions, loan them to clubs where they will play, and invest in youth facilities. FM27's senior training now prepares for matches, so individual training does the developing.
To develop young players in FM27, get them minutes, set their individual training, loan them where they will play, and keep asking the board for better youth facilities. Football Manager 27 changes the first two: its young players weigh game time more heavily, and senior-squad training now works on match preparation, cohesion and tactical understanding instead of the old Units built around attributes, while individual training still improves attributes and teaches traits and new positions. SI has published little FM27-specific youth advice as of Nov 1, 2026, so the age-by-age method below is SI's Football Manager 26 guidance, labeled as such, pending the Nov 10, 2026 release.

What changed for youth development in FM27?
Training. SI says the old Units system, "primarily centred around developing player attributes", has been replaced with sessions aimed at carrying out the next match's plan. Individual training stays: you or your coaches improve attributes and teach traits or new positions, balanced against short-term match needs. FM Scout reports that youth and reserve sessions can be set or delegated, and training schedules can be copied and saved. See Training.
Game time. Young players now weigh game time more heavily, which strengthens the stepping-stone promise in contract talks. A prospect you sign and then bench is more likely to be unhappy.
Loans. AI managers are "more lenient when recalling loanees", and monthly reports now go deeper on loan players, so it is easier to see whether a loan is working. Player status flags add one for reserve and youth team availability.
Work permits. In English saves, Elite Significant Contribution permits are limited to under-23 players, with the cut-off birth date on the rules screen.
Where to start in a new save
SI's first-hours guide for FM27 says to check the Youth Setup Overview for academy players, especially in the Under-23s and Under-19s, who may be close to the first team; the annual Youth Intake arrives later in the season. It also points to the Club Profile screen to see your Training and Youth facilities, so you set realistic expectations and know where to ask the board for investment. For the young players already in the database, see Wonderkids and Bargain Players.
How to develop players at each age
This is SI's Football Manager 26 method from InvWingbacks' Dec 2, 2025 guide. It was written before FM27's training rework, so treat the training part as a principle and check it against FM27's individual training screen.
| Age | Focus in Football Manager 26 (SI) |
|---|---|
| 15 to 17 | Physical development: physical attributes and position-based training rather than a specific role |
| 18 to 21 | Fix technical weaknesses, settle a preferred role, loan to a competitive league |
| 21 and up | A first-team place or a sale; alternate mental and technical focus, start on traits |
SI's goal for the whole system: "never blocking or stagnating a player's progress." The guide suggests keeping a broad Under-18 squad if your coaches can cope, deciding each player's next step at 18, and using the Squad Planner so that by 21 you know whether he has a future at the club. Young players often sell for more than their ability justifies, which can fund the next prospects.
Playing time and loans
Minutes matter in both games. SI's FM26 guide says to loan players from 18 to clubs in competitive leagues where they will get quality minutes, through affiliate clubs or TransferRoom, and to give those who cannot find a loan Under-21 football, rotation and cup games. FM Scout's FM26 first-season guide adds that young players "develop faster with game time" and benefit from coaches' individual attention. Passion4FM suggests saving a separate "Wonderkids XI" team selection for less important cup matches in Football Manager 26.
In FM27, SI's staff responsibilities let you hand jobs such as organizing loan deals to your staff. More on Transfers and Contracts.
Facilities, coaches and the academy
For Football Manager 26, SI's youth intake guide said Youth Facilities and Junior Coaching shape newgens' current and potential ability until intake day, and both are raised by asking the board, not by hiring. It also advised a Head of Youth Development whose preferred formation and style match yours, and one with a strong personality, since newgens may inherit it; SI notes that "a player's personality is one of the biggest factors" in development. FM27's reveals have not said these systems changed (see Youth Development and Newgens and Staff, Board and Finances).
The development screen known as the "Development Centre" has been in the series since Football Manager 2020.
What is not known yet
As of Nov 1, 2026, SI has not described any FM27 change to youth intakes, academies or mentoring, and no FM27 guide from SI or the FM sites covers mentoring. This page will be updated as FM27-specific guides appear after the Nov 10, 2026 release.
Frequently asked questions
How do I develop young players in FM27? Give them regular minutes, set individual training for attributes, traits and positions, loan them to clubs where they will play, and invest in youth facilities; FM27's young players weigh game time more heavily than before.
Does FM27 training still develop players? Yes, through individual training. FM27's team training now prepares for the next match, replacing the Units system, but managers and coaches can still improve attributes and teach traits and new positions individually.
Should I loan out young players in FM27? Yes, when they will play: SI's advice is to loan from about 18 to competitive leagues for quality minutes, and in FM27 AI managers are more lenient about recalling loanees and monthly reports track loan players.
At what age do players stop developing in FM27? SI has not given an FM27 figure. Its Football Manager 26 guide treats 21 as the point where a player should be pushing for the first team or be sold.
How do I get better youth intakes in FM27? In Football Manager 26, SI's advice was to keep asking the board for better Youth Facilities and Junior Coaching and hire a Head of Youth Development who suits your style; FM27 has not announced changes to that system.
